Francesca
Lia Block’s book “Necklace of Kisses” was one of my favorite of the Weetzie Bat
Collection. It’s a 20 years later story about Weetzie Bat having a midlife
crisis pretty much. Her kids Witch Baby and Cherokee Bat are away at college
and Secret Agent Man hasn’t kissed her since the Twin Towers fell. He’s fallen
into his habit of reading about the bad in the newspapers even deeper and
Weetzie is fed up with feeling lonely.
The book
starts with Weetzie packing her things to go to the Pink Hotel where she ran
out on a kiss with her dream guy at the prom. Weetzie is mad at Max because she
feels like he doesn’t love her anymore. So she’s determined to find her first
love again.
Weetzie bat
arrives at the hotel and the Check-in Clerk is a blue woman. Weetzie asks her
why she is blue and the girl explains that she ran away from her boyfriend to
this hotel and turned blue. This weird coincidence and many others make Weetzie
think of Max her Secret Agent Man through out the book.
Through out
the story there are many mystical and fun characters. A mermaid who Weetzie
kisses and discovers her secret, a diva named Heaven who gives her a gift of a
necklace of jewels. There’s also a faun, a spider lady and many more other
characters. There are also weird footsteps that Weetzie bat hears behind her.
Francesca
Lia Block did a great job on this book. It was a great book about what happens
after all your dreams come true. Even 20 years later the characters were still
exciting and the story was a wonderful remembrance of the Weetzie Bat
Collection.
